The Black-crowned Night Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) belongs to the family Ardeidae which includes Bitterns, Egrets, and Herons.
Length. 14-17 inches
Habitat. Rivers, wooded swamps and marshes.
Nesting. Nest is a mass of reeds, sticks, or twigs, among reeds in marsh or up to 160 ft. above the ground in tree. eggs 1-6, pale bluish green. Incubation 24-25 days, by both sexes. Young downy, leave nest 6-7 weeks after hatching. Nests in colonies.
Food. Mainly fish, frogs and crustaceans.
