If you like a plucky dog that fits easily in a country or city life, this may be just the dog for you.
The Australian terrier is a versatile dog and also a great house dog and companion. This is a dog that like to be challenged and will enjoy all kinds of family activities. very inquisitive about what is happening in the vicinity of his home, he has keen hearing and excellent eyesight, and he makes an outstanding watchdog. He can adapt to any climate with his double waterproof coat that sheds very little. He will like the entire family, but he will likely attach himself to a particular member of the family.
Since he is an active dog, he needs his daily romps. Australian terriers are very healthy dogs and have very few health problems. Following some health disorders that may affect your dog:
Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease (LCP Disease) - This is a bone-related disease that can affect many short-legged terrier, as well as humans.
Patellar Luxation - Kneecap Dislocation - In this condition, the patella, or kneecap deviates to the inside of the leg so that the muscles of the leg responsible for straightening of the knee are no longer in alignment. This might result in some lameness or complete non-use of the leg. Conditions that cause this problem are shallow groove, weak ligaments and/or misalignment of the tendons and muscles. The patella then can slip inward or otward.
These problems do exist in the breed and the prospective owner should be aware of them.
