Brittany, Epagneul Breton

Of French origin and more precisely, from the centre of Brittany, this breed is the oldest of the spaniel type dogs. Smallest of the pointing breeds, they have been passed a test on every type of game for which pointing dogs are used. They have the disposition of the best house pet and companion, yet retain a passion for hunting.

The breed has a fantastic nose and superb hunting style. With these attributes it's no wonder that the breed is one of the most esteemed hunting dogs in the United States today. The Brittany Spaniel can be born tailless or with a very short tail.

The Brittany is a medium-sized dog with an acute sense of smell and an excellent retrieving ability. Because its natural pointing instinct is easily developed, the Brittany is a fine choice for the upland bird-hunting dog.

The Brittany is known as a superb woodcock dog that is also successful in locating grouse. He will enter ponds, streams to retrieve waterfowl, and like the pointers, spaniels and setters, he uses windborne scents to locate his quarry. In the field, Brittanys work well in any terrain and most climates.

For those who are not interested in hunting, but do appreciate the active qualities and temperaments of hunting dogs, the beautiful Brittany easily adapts to playing with the kids. He is a great companion for a jogger or runner and is capable of carrying a pack with the owner's water supply. He is a happy, healthy dog that is playful and trustworthy and loves children.

Coat
The coat is fine but not silky, lying flat on the body or with a hint of a wave. It is short on the head and the front of the limbs. The hind part of the latter has a heavier coat, furnished with abundant feathering.

Color
The color is white and orange, white and black, white and liver, with more or less extensive irregular white patches, sometimes with ticking on the top and sides of the muzzle or the limbs. In the case of tricolor coats, with tan spotting (orange to dark tan) on the top and sides of the muzzle, over the eyes, on the limbs, on the chest and over the base of the tail.

Size
17.5-20 inches at shoulders.
