Cairn Terrier Puppies
The Cairn terrier is an active, game and hardy dog with fearless and gay disposition. assertive but not aggressive. Recognized as one of Scotland's earliest working dogs, the Cairn terrier originated on the heather-covered hills of the northwest Highlands and the rugged and remote isle of Skye in the Hebrides. His ancestors were known and values for their determination and courage. Hunters who lived in isolated areas that bordered the Atlantic ocean used their small shaggy-haired terrier to rout otters and badgers, valued for their fur, from cliffs and cairns (piles of stones). Landowners who raised sheep also utilized cairn terriers to drive out foxes that often killed their lambs.
Cairns are quite active and need at least two walks a day to to work off their excess energy. The breed's hunting instincts remain strong. Your cairn will use every chance to go after prey and show off its "kill" to you!
Although cairns won't start a neighborhood fight, few will back down when challenged.
Coat The coat is weather-resistant. Cairns are double-coated, with profuse, harsh, but not coarse, outer coat; the undercoat is short, soft and close. Open coats are objectionable. The official breed standard allows a slight wave in the coat.
Color The colors are cream, wheaten, red, gray or nearly black. Brindling in all these colors is acceptable. The color cannot be solid black, or white, or black and tan. Dark points, such as ears and muzzle, are very typical.
Size 11-12 inches at shoulders.
