There are a number of dogs known as spitz. Among these are the Finnish spitz, the Eskimo dog, the Greenland dog, and the Lapland spitz.
The Greenland dog, also known as Grenlands Hund, has been in existence for centuries. It is one of the most ancient of northern dogs, perfectly adapted for hauling work in the frozen waterlands of the Arctic. The team of 6 or 8 is generally most efficient. The dog was originally called the East Greenland husky.
Its thick coat gives him an excellent protection against the elements. There are no color restriction. The dog is about 22-25 inches tall at the shoulders and weighs about 66-70 pounds. The breed is quite rare even in its homeland where snowmobiles have taken over many of the transport duties. It is still popular for sled-racing, however, and is sometimes used for seal hunting.
Greenland dogs are fiercely loyal to their master and also to one another. In a fight against other dogs the team is as one. They can be wild sometimes, though. These dogs are superb, shaggy creatures. They sleep in the snow, curled up in a ball with eyes and nose buried in their bushy tails.
