The Pekingese is a centuries-old breed. Known for over 2,000 years in China, they were unknown to the western world until the mid-1800s. Of all the breeds of dog, the Pekingese is not only one of the oldest, but also one of the most elegant. It was bred to keep his owner company and nothing else. The Toy breeds are bred to be loyal, affectionate, healthy, and pleasing to look at. The Peke is a lot of energy, but barks very little and is, in general, a very quiet companion. This is a dog that is somewhat defiant, independent, stubborn and plucky. He will not pick a fight, but is fearless.
