Upon viewing this elegant creature, who could debate Whippet's being dscribed as a "piece of canine art"? Nothing is nearer to the truth. A well-constructed Whippet is a truly beautiful animal, with grace displayed in every movement, whether speeding through the field, investigating the yard, or reclining comfortably on a sofa. The breed's graceful lines are clearly seen throught the smooth coat, making a feast for the eyes of any true lover of sighthounds.
The Whippet is a highly adaptable dog who can fit in well most household situations. His size, short coat and clean habits make him easy to have around and a pleasure to keep. The Whippet is a wonderful companion dog: this is an affectionate, faithful and gentle breed with an even temper and quiet disposition. The Whippet may give warning barks, but generally this is a quiet breed. Whippets are very quick, and especially when youngsters, can dash off for some important purpose they have in mind (often connected with food). This means that an owner has to keep an eye on his Whippet's whereabouts and surroundings.

Most Whippets enjoy sun and warmth. Because of their nature, some Whippets do not take kindly to other pets, especially cats. But if socialized early, the majority of Whippets are able to live peacefully with other pets. Whippets are tolerant dogs and most enjoy thoroughly the company of children, especially if they have been sensibly introduced while the dog is still young. Nonetheless, one should always keep in mind that Whippets, like all other dogs, appreciate some peace and quiet and the limits of their tolerance should never be put to the test.
Whippets are considered to be medium-sized, their height ranging between 18-22 inches at the shoulder. However, because this is not a heavy breed, actual weight is usually much less than most other breeds that attain this height. This means that Whippets can be picked up when necessary.
Although basically a healthy breed, the Whippet dos have a few health problems. Anesthesia is one of medications to which Whippets are very sensitive. In part because of their thin skin and their low proportion of body fat, Whippets do feel the cold more than any other breeds. They need to wear warm doggie sweaters when outside in cold weather. They also seem rather susceptible to cold winds.
