Like its larger cousin, the Foxhound, the Beagle is a sturdy intelligent dog with a long, well-documented history.
Beagles have a 500-year tradition of hunting hares, using their fine noses to keep track of their quarry, and running them down by sheer persistence. The smallest dog, standing less than 10 in tall and known as "Pocket Beagles," could be carried to the start of the chase on horseback, in the capacious pocket of a hunting coat. But Beagles were also useful to hunters on foot, and the smaller ones, in particular, were used for hunting rabbits.
Temperament
Cheerful and friendly, but with a tendency of willfulness typical of pack dogs. Obedience training and firm handling are essential. A Beagle is not an easy pet to keep. The independent spirit of beagle males can be real trouble. Males are also more watchful. Don't be surprised, however, if your male beagle quickly warms up to a stranger.
